First Time at Sturgis
Half a million riders, ten days, one small South Dakota town. Sturgis is bigger and looser than most first-timers expect. Here's how to show up prepared.
Know the dates
The 86th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally runs August 7–16, 2026. The biggest crowds hit Tuesday through Friday of rally week. Monday and the final weekend are lighter but still busy. See the full 2026 Rally hub for the official event lineup.
Pick your base first
Camp or hotel is the single biggest decision. Camp puts you closer to the action, the noise, and the concerts. Hotels put you in Deadwood, Spearfish, or Rapid City with real beds and A/C — but you'll ride 20–45 minutes to reach Sturgis each day.

When to arrive
- ★Riding in from far away? Arrive the Wednesday or Thursday before the official kickoff to beat the interstate crawl on I-90.
- ★Want the peak scene? Aim for Tuesday of rally week — Main Street is fully lit and every bar is packed.
- ★Prefer quieter rides and easier photos? Arrive on the closing weekend when crowds thin but venues are still open.
What to expect on Main Street
