Half a million riders, ten days, one small South Dakota town. Sturgis is bigger and looser than most first-timers expect. Here's how to show up prepared.
The 86th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally runs August 7–16, 2026. The biggest crowds hit Tuesday through Friday of rally week. Monday and the final weekend are lighter but still busy. See the full 2026 Rally hub for the official event lineup.
Camp or hotel is the single biggest decision. Camp puts you closer to the action, the noise, and the concerts. Hotels put you in Deadwood, Spearfish, or Rapid City with real beds and A/C — but you'll ride 20–45 minutes to reach Sturgis each day.

Downtown Sturgis during rally is one long, slow, bike-only cruise. Expect to walk more than you ride once you're parked. Vendor rows spill onto side streets. Get the full lay of the land on Downtown & Main Street before you go, and read our Parking & Main Street guide so you don't get stuck.
The Black Hills has scenic loops that suit any skill level. If it's your first rally, start with the easier scenic routes before graduating to the technical stuff. See Best Rides for First-Timers or browse every route on Rides.
Before you leave home, run through the packing list and read up on Black Hills weather. The two together prevent 90% of first-timer complaints.
