What to Pack for Sturgis

A rider-first checklist. If you can only bring what fits on the bike, this is the order to pack it in.

Documents & essentials

  • Motorcycle endorsement, registration, and current insurance card
  • ID plus a backup photo of it on your phone
  • Bank card and a small cash reserve — some vendors are cash-only
  • Reservation confirmations for camp or hotel (printed or offline-saved)
  • Emergency contact card in your jacket pocket

On-body riding gear

  • DOT helmet (South Dakota is helmet-optional for adults, but Black Hills weather changes fast — bring one)
  • Riding jacket with removable liner for the temperature swing
  • Gloves — one summer pair, one water-resistant pair
  • Riding boots plus a lighter pair for the bar
  • Eye protection: clear and tinted
  • Ear plugs — non-negotiable for long days in the wind

Weather layers

The Black Hills swing from 45°F morning to 95°F afternoon and back. See Weather & What to Wear for the why.

  • Compact rain suit or waterproof shell
  • Base layer for cool mornings
  • Bandana or neck gaiter
  • Sunscreen — SPF 30 minimum
  • Lip balm with SPF
  • Reusable water bottle or hydration pack

Bike-side tools & spares

  • Basic tool kit sized to your bike
  • Tire plug kit and a small 12V compressor or CO2
  • Spare fuses, headlight bulb, and a length of zip-ties
  • Chain lube if you're on a chain-driven bike
  • Tank bag or small backpack for daily essentials
  • Phone mount and USB charging lead wired to the bike

Personal & health

  • Prescription medications in original bottles
  • Small first aid kit
  • Ibuprofen, electrolyte tabs
  • Any daily supplements you rely on

Camping only

Skip this section if you're staying at a hotel. Otherwise, add it to the pile. Every mega campground has different amenities — confirm on that campground's page before deciding what to leave home.

  • Tent that can handle wind and a sudden thunderstorm
  • Sleeping bag rated for 45°F nights, plus a small pillow
  • Sleeping pad — the ground is harder than you remember
  • Headlamp and a backup light
  • Small camp towel and shower flip-flops
  • Trash bags, a padlock, and a compact power bank
