What to Expect

Iron Mountain Road (US-16A), Needles Highway (SD-87), the Wildlife Loop and US-16A back — all under the Peter Norbeck designation. 70 miles of the tightest, most technical pavement in South Dakota. Custer State Park entry fee applies.

Ride Brief

Skill Level

Advanced. Combines everything technical in the Hills: pigtail bridges, one-lane granite tunnels, hairpins, bison in the road. If you're new to a heavy bike, ride it as two half-days.

Fuel

Fuel in Custer or Hill City before you start. Keystone mid-loop is your only in-park top-off. Longest dry stretch is ~30 mi.

Food Along the Way

State Game Lodge, Sylvan Lake Lodge, and Alpine Inn (Hill City, short detour) are the trustworthy sit-down stops.

Best Time to Ride

Weekday, first light. Tour buses and RVs choke the tunnels by 10am.
