# Weather & What to Wear

August in the Black Hills looks like summer on paper. On the bike, it's four seasons in a single afternoon. Plan for the range, not the average.

## The daily pattern

Mornings in Sturgis and up in the Hills often start in the 45–60°F range. Afternoons regularly push into the mid-90s at lower elevations. Sunset rides get chilly again — especially coming down from Custer State Park or the Needles.

The takeaway: layer up in the morning, peel down at noon, and never leave camp without something warm to add back.

## Storms happen fast

Afternoon thunderstorms build quickly over the Black Hills. What looks like a distant cloud at lunch can be lightning and hail an hour later. Keep a compact rain suit on the bike, always.

If you see a wall of dark cloud building to the west, get off the mountain roads. Iron Mountain and Needles Highway are miserable — and dangerous — in a hailstorm.

## Elevation matters

Sturgis sits around 3,400 feet. Rides like [Needles Highway and Iron Mountain](/rides) climb well over 6,000 feet. Every 1,000 feet is roughly 3–5°F cooler and often windier. What felt perfect in town can be uncomfortable up high.

## Sun & hydration

- ★ Wind on the bike hides how much sun you're taking — burn happens fast.
- ★ SPF 30+ on face, neck, hands, and any exposed forearm.
- ★ Carry water. A hydration pack under a mesh jacket is worth its weight.
- ★ Electrolyte tabs beat plain water on hot ride days.

## What to wear on the bike

- ★ Ventilated jacket with removable liner — cool in the afternoon, warm at 6 a.m.
- ★ Full-finger gloves and a lighter mesh pair for the hottest hours.
- ★ Neck gaiter for sun, wind, and dust off Main Street traffic.
- ★ Rain suit stashed in the saddlebag — always.
- ★ Tinted eye protection for midday, clear for evening.

## Ride smart in Black Hills weather

Weather is the biggest reason a beginner should ease into the harder loops. Start on more forgiving routes in the [Best Rides for First-Timers](/guide/best-sturgis-rides-for-first-timers) guide and work your way up.
